A new analysis suggests that teenagers and young adults taking high doses of prescription amphetamines have a greater than fivefold increased risk of developing psychosis or mania. The risk was highest with doses of ≥ 30 mg of dextroamphetamine, corresponding to 40 mg of Adderall. Past-month use of methylphenidate was not associated with an increased risk. Researchers recommend caution with high doses of amphetamines and stress the need for monitoring by both patients and doctors when these medications are prescribed. The study highlights the importance of considering dose levels when prescribing stimulants to mitigate the risk of psychosis or mania, especially in younger populations.
