The UN has launched a vaccination campaign in central Gaza to protect children from polio, aiming to vaccinate 90% of children in the occupied Palestinian territory. A baby was recently paralyzed by the disease, the first case in Gaza in 25 years. The World Health Organization and Unicef have called for a pause in fighting in Gaza to allow for the distribution of polio vaccines. Variant poliovirus type 2 was found in Gaza’s sewage in June, raising concerns about a potential polio outbreak. The vaccination campaign is being implemented to prevent the spread of polio in the region.
