A recent study suggests that picky eating in children is largely influenced by genetics, not parenting. The study found that children with food fussiness traits may continue this behavior into early adolescence. The study, involving 4,804 twins born in England and Wales, found that genetic factors accounted for 60% to 74% of food fussiness variation from ages 16 months to 13 years. Shared environmental factors were important in toddlerhood, but unique experiences like having different friends played a bigger role as children got older. While genetics drive food fussiness, creating a positive eating environment can still influence children’s eating habits over time.
