During the COVID-19 pandemic, women have closed the “gender promotion gap,” with male doctors from abroad now less likely to be promoted to consultant level compared to their British-trained counterparts. A study from the University of Surrey and the University of Cyprus analyzed data on over 10,000 junior hospital doctors from March 2017 to February 2023. The pandemic created a “career shock” with promotions significantly impacted. These findings were presented at the British Academy of Management conference in Nottingham. The study highlights the ongoing challenges faced by foreign-trained doctors in the UK healthcare system during and post-pandemic.
