Excess abdominal fat raises the risk of metabolic disorders and chronic pain, particularly in women. A study found a link between visceral fat accumulation and widespread chronic pain in various body areas. The study included 32,409 participants in the UK Biobank study, analyzing data from questionnaires, health assessments, and MRI scans. Results showed a clear association between chronic pain and body fat types, with women being more affected than men. While the study cannot establish a cause-and-effect relationship, reducing abdominal adiposity may be considered a target for chronic pain management, especially in those with pain in multiple sites.
