Excess abdominal fat tied to widespread chronic pain

A study published in Regional Anesthesia & Pain Medicine found that excessive abdominal fat is associated with chronic pain in multiple sites, especially in women. Researchers analyzed data from the U.K. Biobank and found that higher levels of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) were linked to an increased number of chronic pain sites. This association remained even after adjusting for various factors. The study suggests that reducing abdominal adiposity through lifestyle changes could help manage chronic pain. Future research should focus on understanding the mechanisms connecting fat distribution to chronic pain, particularly the observed sex differences.
