A man in New York has died from Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), a rare and deadly mosquito-borne virus. This marks the first human fatality from EEE in the state since 2015. The state has declared EEE as an imminent public health threat, prompting residents to take precautions against mosquito-borne illnesses. This is the second EEE-related fatality in the U.S. this year. State resources will support local health departments in prevention efforts. EEE symptoms include fever and can progress to neurological conditions like meningitis and encephalitis. There is no commercially available human vaccine, and the best prevention is to protect oneself from mosquito bites.
