The weekend discharge rate at 14 of the 26 largest public hospitals in the country decreased from 2019 to 2023. Midlands Regional Hospital had the highest weekend discharge rate at 18%, a decrease from four years ago. Cork University Hospital also had an 18% weekend discharge rate, down slightly from 2019. Our Lady’s Hospital in Navan had the lowest weekend discharge rate at 9%, up by one percentage point from 2019. The new public-only consultants’ contract aims to increase patient flow throughout the week. Health Minister Stephen Donnelly emphasized the importance of maximizing the contract’s potential to benefit patients.
