Hospitalized older adults have a higher risk of death from respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) compared to influenza B, though the risk is similar to influenza A. Improved testing strategies and outreach could lower the risk for death. A study found that RSV infections can be equally severe and deadly as influenza, especially among older and frail populations. The study recommended RSV vaccination for adults aged 75 and older, as well as those aged 60 to 74 with an increased risk for severe disease. It highlighted the severity of RSV and stressed the importance of harmonizing testing strategies and increasing awareness for targeted vaccination efforts.
