An analysis of productivity data shows significant differences in the average number of outpatient appointments carried out by hospital consultants in different regions across the country. Consultants in the Dublin and South-East region saw more appointments than those in the Dublin and Midlands region. Nationally, there were fewer outpatient appointments per full-time consultant in 2023 compared to 2016. The Department of Health is calling for improvements in productivity and has instructed the HSE to take action in underperforming areas. The Irish Medical Organisation emphasizes the need for further examination of hospital productivity factors and supports to enable consultants to see more patients.
