A recent study has found that children’s screen time habits closely mirror those of their parents, and excessive screen use in the family can negatively impact children’s language development. The study suggests the need to limit screen time and focus on more face-to-face interaction within the family for improved language skills. The research team studied over 400 parents and their children, aged 2.5 to 4 years, and found a clear connection between excessive screen time and poorer vocabulary and grammar skills in children. Even screen-based activities that promote socializing or co-viewing did not improve language development. The study, however, has limitations in terms of tracking development over time and being conducted before the COVID-19 pandemic.
