The study investigated prescriptions for opioid-containing cough suppressants in adults with chronic vs. non-chronic cough. Results showed a higher likelihood of receiving these prescriptions in those with chronic cough, particularly in patients with Medicaid. The study involved 23,210 adults with chronic cough and 229,538 with non-chronic cough. Overall, opioids played a significant role in chronic cough care, with hydrocodone being a commonly prescribed opioid. Various factors, including insurance type, race, and residence, were associated with increased odds of receiving these prescriptions. The findings suggest a need for further research on therapeutic strategies and patient follow-up for chronic cough.
