In two letters, 195 members of Congress urged leadership to extend the enhanced premium tax credits that are set to expire in 2025. These credits, introduced in 2021, have reduced health insurance costs for millions of marketplace plan purchasers, resulting in a record 21.4 million enrollments for the 2024 Open Enrollment Period. The letters emphasized the positive impact of these credits on health equity, especially among Black and Hispanic Americans. If the credits expire, over 20 million people will see increased health insurance costs, and 3 million could lose coverage, disproportionately affecting certain groups like those in rural areas and older enrollees. The letters called for the Senate to act quickly to make these credits permanent to protect American families from high healthcare costs.
