We need a National Food Strategy

admin

Dr. Catherine Conlon emphasizes the need to start a conversation about building a national Food Strategy. A proposal from Professor Donal O’Shea suggests treating high sugar foods like cigarettes with plain packaging, removing branding, and standardizing packaging. While comparing ultra-processed food with tobacco is simplistic, measures like limiting online marketing of unhealthy foods, warning labels, and taxation are needed. The Cork Food Policy Council is working to develop a Food Strategy for a resilient, sustainable, and healthier food system. Emphasizing community involvement, the strategy aims to provide nourishing food for all, build a local food economy, promote community-centered food environments, and support lifelong learning and skills around food.
