The National Academy of Sciences report found that COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective, providing protection against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Common adverse events were temporary flu-like symptoms and soreness at the injection site. The report reviewed data on adverse events from various vaccines and found no evidence that the vaccines caused neurologic conditions, hearing loss, blood clotting disorders, vascular conditions, female infertility, or sudden death. The report did find a causal relationship between mRNA vaccines and myocarditis and pericarditis, and the Janssen vaccine with Guillain-Barré Syndrome and thrombosis. Overall, the vaccines were deemed safe, with serious adverse events being rare and less harmful than contracting COVID-19.
