A recent study in The Lancet Regional Health – Europe found that symptomatic chlamydia infections significantly increase the risk of pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, and tubal factor infertility. The study followed 5704 women over a long period, with chlamydia-positive women showing higher rates of PID at 3.8 per 1000 person-years. Symptomatic chlamydia infections posed a higher risk for adverse reproductive outcomes, while asymptomatic infections did not show the same association. The study highlights the importance of primary prevention, early detection, and timely treatment of chlamydia, especially in young women, to reduce complications in reproductive health.
