A study comparing surgical techniques for Crohn’s disease found that small bowel resection is associated with the longest hospital stay and increased odds of postoperative wound complications. The research, conducted on 2,578 patients undergoing open or laparoscopic resection or strictureplasty for CD, showed that combined surgery had the longest operative time. Patients undergoing small bowel resection had the highest incidence of wound infections and sepsis. However, all three surgical approaches had similar outcomes for reoperation, readmission, and patient discharge. The study highlights the importance of considering the different surgical options and their associated risks for patients with Crohn’s disease.
