A study published in the journal JAMA Network Open found that the percentage of people attempting self-managed abortions has increased since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Tia Freeman, a reproductive health organizer, leads workshops on safely taking abortion pills outside of medical settings in Tennessee, where abortion is almost entirely illegal. The study, conducted by Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health, surveyed over 7,000 people and found that the percentage using the abortion pill mifepristone increased after the Supreme Court’s decision. Privacy concerns and state laws criminalizing abortion were cited as reasons for seeking self-managed abortions.
