Research reveals autoimmune mechanism behind multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children

admin

A study found a mechanism behind multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) caused by COVID-19. The immune systems of affected children attacked their own tissues after latching onto a part of the coronavirus resembling a human protein. This discovery came from a collaborative effort by scientists from various institutions. Through Phage Immunoprecipitation Sequencing (PhIP-Seq), autoantibodies targeting the human protein SNX8 were linked to the virus. T cells were found to be involved in the autoimmune response. Most MIS-C patients have recovered, and the findings offer insights into immune dysregulation diseases like multiple sclerosis and type 1 diabetes. The study provides a new approach to understanding and treating autoimmune diseases.
