Jonathan Spencer, a neurology academic clinical fellow, discusses the challenges of academic medical training. While much attention is on the lottery-based recruitment to specialized programs, there is little focus on the confusion and complexity of academic training post-specialized foundation programs. The integrated academic training pathway is difficult to navigate and understand, especially for those who followed a simpler training path. Spencer hopes that publications like The BMJ will continue to shed light on the current state of academic medical training and bring awareness to the challenges faced by trainees in this field.
