The Pan-American Health Organization has reported an increase in Oropouche virus infections in Brazil, Ecuador, French Guiana, Panama, Peru, and Trinidad and Tobago. Concerns have been raised about the impact of Oropouche virus on pregnancy, with evidence suggesting it may cause birth defects. Health officials are worried about vertical transmission from mother to fetus. Researchers are urging caution against insect bites as there is no specific treatment or vaccine for Oropouche fever. The United States CDC has also warned travelers about mosquito and midge bites. Studies have detected Oropouche virus in newborns with microcephaly and in cases of miscarriage, indicating vertical transmission.
