New optical neural chip technology reveals unexpected dopamine dynamics

DGIST’s Department of Brain Sciences Professor Lee Kwang and his team discovered a new correlation between neural signaling in the brain and dopamine signaling in the striatum. They found that changes in dopamine signals within the physiological range do not affect brain neural signal processing in less than a second. This challenges current theories that dopamine has the strongest effect on brain neural signals. The team developed an “optical neural chip-based multiple brain signal monitoring technology” to analyze this relationship, confirming that dopamine signaling plays a minor role in rapidly shaping neural activity in the striatum. Their findings were published in Nature Neuroscience.
