More than 5,000 ED deaths in past five years

admin

More than 5,000 people have died in emergency departments (EDs) in the past five years, with over 1,000 deaths occurring last year alone. Cork University Hospital had the highest number of deaths in its ED, with 158 people passing away there last year. Seventeen hospitals saw an increase in ED fatalities compared to pre-pandemic levels. Factors contributing to ED deaths include the age and illness level of patients, as well as delays in treatment. Challenges in transferring critically ill patients and resource limitations in hospitals also play a role. The rising number of patients seeking care in EDs is adding to the strain on the healthcare system.
