Making of a Blood Cancer Specialist

Areej El-Jawahri, MD, moved from Iraq to the United States and initially planned to study law. However, after a friend’s terminal cancer diagnosis, she was inspired to pursue a career in hematology and palliative care. She is now a practitioner at Massachusetts General Hospital and advocates for palliative care in oncology. El-Jawahri emphasizes the importance of integrating palliative care early in the course of illness to improve end-of-life preferences and discussions. Her research focuses on enhancing quality of life for patients with acute myeloid leukemia through palliative care interventions. She is also investigating how to train oncology clinicians in primary palliative care to better meet patient needs.
