A recent analysis by the American Cancer Society found that 40% of new cancer cases and 44% of cancer deaths in 2019 in the US were linked to modifiable risk factors such as smoking, excess body weight, alcohol consumption, and physical inactivity. Cigarette smoking was the leading risk factor, contributing to 19.3% of cases and 28.5% of deaths. Excess body weight was responsible for nearly 7.6% of cases and deaths. The combination of excess body weight, alcohol, diet, and physical inactivity contributed to a large proportion of cancer cases in women. The study suggests implementing preventive initiatives to reduce cancer rates. The findings were published in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians.
