The HSE saw a 25% increase in requests for assessments of need for children in 2023, with just 13% of assessments completed within the required timeline. Parents are reporting long wait times of up to two and a half years for assessments. The Progressing Disability Services (PDS) framework was established three years ago to address delays in service provision, but has faced criticism from staff. An increase in assessments showing ‘no disability’ has been noted, while vacancies in Children’s Disability Network Teams remain high. The HSCP group has raised concerns about the effectiveness of the PDS committee and is calling for urgent action to improve services.
