Increase alcohol excise duty to save lives

admin

Alcohol Action Ireland is calling for a 15% increase in excise duty on alcohol to help reduce road deaths. Research shows that a 10% increase in alcohol prices can lead to a 7% reduction in road fatalities. In Ireland, this could mean 13 fewer deaths in a year. AAI CEO Dr. Sheila Gilheany emphasized the need for a comprehensive strategy to address drink driving, which is a significant factor in road fatalities. Currently, alcohol in Ireland is very affordable, especially for young people. The organization also called for stricter enforcement of drink driving laws, the use of the ‘alcolock’ system, and access to alcohol treatment for offenders.
