Home foreclosure is associated with an increased risk of memory decline in late middle age, leading to an equivalent of 3.7 extra years of cognitive aging over a decade. Researchers studied data from the Health and Retirement Study from 2008 to 2018, analyzing memory scores and dementia probability over time. Foreclosure was linked to a faster cognitive decline in adults aged 50-64, suggesting that chronic stress from foreclosure may affect brain structure and contribute to dementia. While older individuals initially experienced a greater decline, their scores eventually normalized. The study identified limitations, such as a small sample size and potential confounding factors, highlighting the need for further research.
