African trial of HIV prevention through twice yearly injection shows promising results in preventing new infections in adolescent girls and young women in South Africa and Uganda. UNAIDS leaders believe this could break the cycle of mass infection in sub-Saharan Africa. However, the success of this treatment depends on lowering the cost of the new long-acting injectable PrEP options in the west. Lenacapavir, one such injectable antiretroviral, was found to be more effective in preventing HIV compared to common oral treatments. The results, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, showed zero new infections in the injected participants, highlighting the potential of this new treatment.
