The England and Wales High Court granted an application for a fresh inquest into the death of an elderly man who went missing in 2009 and whose body was found almost four years later. The original inquest had recorded an ‘Open Conclusion’ due to lack of evidence. Skeletal remains discovered in December 2022 were confirmed to be the missing man, prompting the need for a new inquest. The court found it necessary and in the interest of justice to hold a fresh inquest to consider the new evidence. No criticism of the original coroner was made, but the discovery of the remains justified a new investigation.
