Researchers at the RIKEN Center for Brain Science in Japan have discovered a new way to combat Alzheimer’s disease using dopamine. The study, published in Science Signaling, found that dopamine promotes the production of the enzyme neprilysin, which can break down harmful plaques in the brain associated with Alzheimer’s. Using a mouse model, the researchers demonstrated that treatment with dopamine reduced beta-amyloid plaques and improved memory. They also explored the use of L-DOPA as a potential treatment for Alzheimer’s. Further research is needed to understand how dopamine regulates neprilysin and to develop preventive approaches for Alzheimer’s disease.
