A report by the Lancet Commission found that 45% of dementia cases can be delayed or prevented by addressing 14 risk factors such as high cholesterol and vision loss. The risk factors should be addressed starting in childhood and continuing throughout life, regardless of genetic predisposition. The report also includes two new risk factors – untreated vision loss and high LDL cholesterol. Lead author Gill Livingston emphasizes the importance of taking action at any stage of life to reduce the risk of developing dementia. This highlights the significance of addressing modifiable risk factors to reduce the overall burden of dementia.
