A study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association found that exposure to fine particulate matter of 2.5 µm or less (PM2.5) was associated with an increased risk for adverse events in Medicare beneficiaries with preexisting heart failure. Patients younger than 75 years, Asian individuals, and those living in rural areas were at greater risk. Each interquartile range (IQR) of PM2.5 was associated with higher risks for death and first heart failure hospitalization. The researchers suggested interventions to reduce PM2.5 exposure at both the individual and community level to improve heart failure outcomes.
