Wastewater surveillance group cuts many pathogen detection sites

WastewaterSCAN, a prominent private entity in the US providing real-time data on pathogens in wastewater, has stopped collecting data from 43 facilities due to resource constraints. The group, which had been monitoring 194 sites in 41 states, including 39 million people, is focusing on other projects. Funding from philanthropic sources led to its growth, but financial uncertainty looms for wastewater monitoring programs. The CDC, conducting a majority of wastewater monitoring, faces limited funding and differing protocols across states. Despite WastewaterSCAN’s reduction, experts believe daily pathogen monitoring will remain largely unaffected, highlighting the importance of consistent and widespread surveillance.
