A study presented at NUTRITION found that there was a modest and insignificant association between high intake of ultraprocessed foods (UPFs) and the risk for type 2 diabetes in middle-aged adults. The study included 10,012 participants aged 45 years at baseline from the REGARDS study. Participants’ dietary intake was assessed through a food frequency questionnaire, and they were grouped based on UPF intake. The researchers found that higher UPF intake was associated with a greater risk for type 2 diabetes, although the associations were weak and imprecise. More research is needed to understand the relationship between UPF intake and diabetes risk.
