A group of UK researchers conducted a large randomized trial to study the effectiveness of over-the-counter nasal sprays in preventing coughs, colds, and flu. The study found that nasal sprays can help keep these illnesses at bay and prevent full-blown symptoms from developing. Researchers from the universities of Southampton and Bristol analyzed data from nearly 12,000 adults from 332 GP practices. Patients were randomized to receive either a gel-based nasal spray, a saline liquid-based nasal spray, or an online tool promoting physical activity. The study’s results suggest that nasal sprays may be an effective preventative measure against respiratory illnesses.
