Road safety: Rise in deaths in Africa reflects inadequate laws and enforcement, WHO finds

admin

Africa experienced a significant increase in road traffic deaths in 2021, with nearly 250,000 lives lost on the continent’s roads, the highest number in a decade. Data from the World Health Organization shows that deaths from road traffic incidents in Africa increased by 17% from 2010 to 2021, compared to a 5% decrease worldwide. This rise in road deaths poses a threat to the region’s goal of halving road deaths and injuries by 2030. Despite Africa having only 15% of the world’s population and 3% of its vehicles, it accounts for nearly a fifth of all global road traffic deaths.
