Von Willebrand disease affects around 1 in 100 people and is the most common inherited bleeding disorder. A new study from RCSI University of Medicine has identified a new medicine called BT200 that could help patients with this condition. This drug works by slowing down the removal of von Willebrand factor from the bloodstream by immune system cells called macrophages. This discovery opens up the possibility of more targeted treatments for von Willebrand disease and other blood disorders like hemophilia A. The research was supported by a Future (FFP) Award and the US National Institutes of Health and was published in the journal Blood.
