A new report on productivity in the health service suggests that more inpatient procedures in Irish hospitals should be done on a day-case basis by default. The report also recommends using improved discharge templates to reduce readmissions and average length-of-stay, increasing flu vaccine uptake, and other measures to improve efficiency. The report points to research showing the cost savings and benefits of day-case surgery, and notes that advances in medical technologies have made same-day procedures more feasible. Health Minister Stephen Donnelly has endorsed the report’s recommendations, which will be considered by the Productivity and Savings Taskforce for implementation.
