A study published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine found that exposure to benzene at work increased the odds for developing lung cancer. Researchers analyzed data from 14 case-control studies involving over 12,000 individuals with lung cancer and over 15,000 controls. They found that even low levels of benzene exposure were associated with higher odds of lung cancer, and the risk increased with both the length of exposure and the time since exposure. This increased risk was observed in current, former, and never smokers, highlighting the importance of regulating benzene exposure in the workplace.
