The Irish Medical Organisation has welcomed the lifting of the HSE’s recruitment embargo but expressed concern over the retention of a staffing ceiling. The embargo has been lifted after the Government promised an additional €1.5 billion in funding for the health service. The IMO stated that the staffing ceiling from December 2023 will hinder efforts to address staffing issues and meet rising demand for healthcare. A survey by the IMO showed that 77% of NCHDs are working beyond safe hours. The lifting of the embargo will see conversion of agency posts to HSE posts, leading to a reduction in agency spending.
