Prolonged screen time in children and adolescents is linked to a higher risk of developing myopia, with computers and televisions having the most significant impact on eye health. A meta-analysis of 19 studies involving over 100,000 participants found a strong association between screen time and myopia. Each additional hour spent on screens per day increased the risk of myopia by 7%. While smartphones did not show a significant association with myopia, using computers and televisions did. The researchers suggest that educational pressure and increased use of technology may contribute to the rise in myopia cases. However, the study had limitations, including a lack of causality determination and heterogeneity among studies.
