A study presented at NUTRITION found that middle-aged and older adults who consumed higher amounts of ultraprocessed foods had a 10% increased risk of death over a 23-year follow-up period. Highly processed meats and soft drinks were strongly associated with mortality risk, particularly for deaths related to heart disease and diabetes. The study included data from over 500,000 participants and found that those in the 90th percentile of UPF consumption had a higher risk of death compared to those in the 10th percentile. The researchers suggest that reducing consumption of ultraprocessed foods can help improve health outcomes.
