The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services authorized five states to provide Medicaid/CHIP coverage to those transitioning out of incarceration before release, in an effort to improve access to healthcare services for those leaving jail or prison. This initiative, called the Medicaid Reentry Section 1115 Demonstration Opportunity, allows states to cover certain services and connect individuals to community-based providers. Healthcare leaders are supportive of this move, noting that access to healthcare during the reentry period is crucial for reducing recidivism and improving overall well-being. The Biden-Harris Administration sees this as a significant step in addressing the overdose epidemic and helping marginalized individuals succeed post-release.
