Drugs that kill ‘zombie’ cells may benefit some older women, but not all, study finds

Mayo Clinic researchers found that drugs targeting senescent cells, also known as “zombie cells,” may benefit healthy older women with a high number of these cells, linked to chronic inflammation and aging-related diseases. Specifically, the combination of dasatinib and quercetin increased bone formation in women with a high number of senescent cells in a 20-week trial. These senolytic drugs could be beneficial in treating aging-related diseases like idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, dementia, diabetes, and heart disease, but more research is needed to customize treatments based on cell numbers. Commercial products like quercetin may not be effective without knowing the levels of senescent cells in an individual.
