Colorado has disenrolled a large share of Medicaid beneficiaries since the pandemic-era restrictions were lifted, standing out as the only blue state in a group of red states with high disenrollment rates. Despite having progressive policies in place, Colorado has seen a significant drop in enrollment due to issues with technology, low rates of automatic renewals, and high unemployment rates. State officials attribute the drop in enrollment to more people finding jobs, but advocates and researchers point to administrative and technological issues contributing to the high disenrollment rate. Nearly 500,000 Coloradans were disenrolled for procedural reasons, with many later determined to be eligible for Medicaid.
