Researchers have found that sildenafil, commonly known as Viagra, may have potential for repurposing in the treatment and prevention of vascular dementia, a condition caused by impaired blood flow to the brain. A study showed that Viagra improved blood circulation and responsiveness in brain blood vessels, which are key factors in preventing vascular dementia. The study, led by Dr. Alastair Webb from Oxford University, involved 75 participants with minor strokes and small vessel disease who were treated with Viagra, a placebo, or a similar drug. Results showed improved blood flow in the brain with fewer side effects compared to the other drug. Larger trials are recommended to confirm these findings.
