Vertex reports positive results in stem cell trial for type 1 diabetes

A therapy derived from stem cells allowed twelve people with type 1 diabetes to produce enough insulin to maintain healthy blood glucose levels. Most participants reduced or eliminated the need for insulin injections over three months, with three individuals no longer requiring injections at all after one year. Researchers believe this approach holds promise for potentially relieving some people with type 1 diabetes of the need for daily insulin injections. Endocrinologist Jay Skyler commented on the success of the treatment, noting that the cells used in the therapy were effective.
