A recent study published in The Lancet Regional Health—Europe found that consuming ultra-processed plant-based foods is linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases and mortality, despite the health benefits typically associated with plant-based diets. Researchers analyzed data from over 118,000 participants and found that plant-based non-UPFs were associated with better health outcomes, while plant-based UPFs were linked to poor health outcomes. Specifically, replacing plant-based UPFs with plant-based non-UPFs was associated with a lower risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and mortality. The study emphasizes the importance of reducing the consumption of ultra-processed foods and promoting plant-based diets to improve overall health.
