New research published in The Lancet in 2024 confirms that certain commonly prescribed blood pressure medications, such as calcium channel blockers and angiotensin receptor blockers, can lower the risk of dementia by up to 30%. High blood pressure has long been known to contribute to dementia, and treating hypertension can lower the risk. The study conducted by Amsterdam-based researchers analyzed 34 years of Dutch medical records and found that certain types of antihypertensive drugs may have a direct effect on brain health in addition to regulating blood pressure. Further research is needed to confirm these findings and potentially change blood pressure treatment guidelines in the future.
